For this project, the goal was creating a cohesive book series that teaches to balance cohesiveness while still having independent designs. After first researching a series whether it’s already a book, or a movie or even a video game then creating sketch ideas. After sketching placing everything in Adobe Illustrator.
Process:
I struggled the most with trying to figure out what view of the character I wanted to portray that could most show the character and all the details about them. Once I was able to distinct that, it made my process way easier.
Book 1 Iterations:
For each character I drew them individually by shape, so that I could render them to the best ability. I started with a base of colors and then added highlights and shadows. The mask was one of the biggest aspects of this character so I played around with a lot of different iterations of the mask. The lanterns were specifically drawn as a base first and then I added highlights and shadows as needed to help create more depth. The imagery I wanted to go with was more of a fantasy book, which most books like that have a lot of detail. For the columns I added the tattoo on the arm of the character as the pattern and added gold rims to the windows to create a contrast between the dark columns and backgrounds.
Book 2 Iterations:
For this book design I wanted to still incorporate the window background idea. In the game she’s inspired off of Japanese style things. So I added Japanese styled pattern doors for the flaps and then added more detail to her character. Another iteration to keep the overall cohesiveness between the books was changing around the text placement. Another thing I struggled with was find a concept for the hanging aspect of this book design. I also later for all of the books added more logos to the back next to the barcode to add clairty of what the book is inspired off of.
Book 3 Iterations:
I struggled with figuring out what to put for the cohesive background but I worked on the character design first that way the background felt like it went with the character. I wanted crescent moons to be all over the book because that’s what this character is known for in game. But I wanted to still stick on theme with the windows. With the text I wanted some of the text to be behind the character to add depth on the fantasy style book. I ended up adding vines from the place this character is from as the hanging piece for the book and adding in clouds from the first and second book but different colors so it stayed on theme.
